Greens Demand Apology or Resignation from Bob Katter Over Threat to Journalist
The Australian Greens have formally called for veteran crossbench MP Bob Katter to resign from parliament if he does not issue an unreserved apology for threatening a journalist at a press conference last week.
The demand, made by Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young, follows comments from Mr. Katter on Monday in which he said he was not apologetic for the incident and wished he had been ‘more aggressive’.
The controversy began at a press conference in Brisbane on Thursday, when Mr. Katter was questioned by Nine News reporter Josh Bavas about his own Lebanese heritage ahead of nationwide ‘March for Australia’ rallies.
In response, Mr. Katter confronted the journalist and threatened physical violence. On Monday, he escalated the matter, telling SBS News he was “not apologetic” for his actions.
Parliamentary Censure Sought
In response to Mr. Katter’s defiance, Senator Hanson-Young has written to the Independent Parliamentary Standards Commission to request a formal investigation into his conduct.
“Threats of violence have no place in Australian political discourse, especially coming from a member of parliament,” she said.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese had previously commented on the incident, stating that Mr. Katter should “have a look at himself” and that his behaviour was not what is expected of a public official.
