A devastating day in NSW has seen two men die in separate domestic violence incidents, leaving families and communities reeling in shock. The first incident occurred in Sydney’s south west, where a 60-year-old man died while being arrested for allegedly assaulting his 58-year-old wife.
According to Acting Assistant Commissioner Trent King, police were called to a home on Bligh Avenue in Lurnea at around 4:05pm on Friday, where they found the woman seriously injured. The man, who police allege was the woman’s husband, fled the scene and was later arrested at a nearby address on Spica Street in Sadleir.
“The man was being treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics after taking prohibited drugs,” Acting Assistant Commissioner King said. “He was handcuffed for a short period of time; there was no force from the information I have at this stage. As his health declined, the handcuffs were removed at the request of ambulance staff so they could continue treatment.”
The man was taken to Westmead Hospital for further treatment, where he sadly died a short time later. The woman was taken to Liverpool Hospital with serious head injuries. A weapon was found at the scene, Acting Assistant Commissioner King confirmed.
In a separate incident, a 29-year-old man was arrested over the death of a woman in her 20s in Mullumbimby, NSW’s Northern Rivers region. Police were called to a unit on Poinciana Street at around 11:55pm on Friday, following reports of a domestic incident. The woman was found deceased inside, and the man was arrested at the scene.
A crime scene was established, and an investigation has commenced. The woman is yet to be formally identified.
Police have declared a critical incident over the first death, with the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission and Professional Standards Command to oversee the investigation. A report will be prepared for the coroner.
