A heart-stopping police pursuit through Melbourne’s CBD has ended in chaos, with a pedestrian mowed down by a stolen BMW and four teenagers charged over the mayhem.
The drama unfolded on Monday afternoon when police began pursuing the allegedly stolen car on the Eastern Freeway in Doncaster about 12:30pm. The vehicle was driven erratically through the city, striking a pedestrian on Exhibition Street.
The woman, who suffered non-life-threatening injuries, was rushed to hospital for observation. Witnesses described the terrifying scenes, which brought back haunting memories of the 2017 Bourke Street tragedy that claimed six lives.
“I saw the vehicle coming down, and the first thing that popped into my mind was the Gargasoulas and Bourke Street tragedy,” one shaken shopper told 7NEWS. “I’m just grateful I had the foresight to think we need to sit somewhere a little bit incognito.”
The four teenagers, including two 17-year-olds and two 16-year-olds, allegedly jumped out of the car and ran into Myer in a desperate bid to evade police. They were arrested a short time later inside the Emporium shopping centre.
The teens have been charged with a string of offences, including theft of a motor vehicle, driving in a dangerous manner, and conduct endangering life. One of the 17-year-olds was granted bail, while the remaining teens were remanded to face court on Tuesday.
The incident has sparked outrage, with many calling for tougher penalties for reckless driving. As the investigation continues, police are urging witnesses to come forward.
In a stark warning, police reminded drivers of the devastating consequences of reckless behaviour behind the wheel. “This incident is a sobering reminder of the risks associated with dangerous driving,” a police spokesperson said.
