A 24-year-old female teacher has been sacked from an elite, all-boys Catholic college and charged with the shocking sexual abuse of a student in what the school’s principal has described as a “distressing betrayal of trust”.
Ella Clements is accused of engaging in an inappropriate relationship with a schoolboy at the prestigious St Augustine’s College in Brookvale, on Sydney’s northern beaches.
She has been hit with a string of serious charges, including three counts of aggravated sexual intercourse with a child and one count of intentionally sexually touching a child.
The college’s principal, Jonathan Byrne, confirmed in a letter to horrified parents that the school immediately notified police and stood Clements down as soon as they became aware of the disturbing allegations. Her employment has since been terminated.
‘I believe that the former teacher has betrayed the trust placed in them by the college and families,’ Mr Byrne wrote, acknowledging the investigation would be an ‘incredibly distressing time’ for the school community.
In a dramatic courtroom showdown at Manly Local Court on Monday, Clements was granted bail under strict conditions, including a ban from all social media. But in a rare legal move, the police prosecutor immediately applied to stay the decision, blocking her release.
The stunning intervention means Clements will remain locked up behind bars on remand until a detention application can be heard in the NSW Supreme Court. An interim apprehended domestic violence order has also been put in place to protect the student.
Clements has not yet entered any pleas to the charges.
