- US President Donald Trump calls for immediate cessation of Israeli bombing in Gaza, paving way for historic peace deal
- Hamas agrees to release all Israeli hostages, but demands further negotiations on key terms, including disarmament
- Trump hails Hamas as “ready for a lasting PEACE” and puts pressure on Israeli government to reciprocate, amid warnings of grave consequences if deal collapses
In a dramatic turn of events, US President Donald Trump has instructed Israel to immediately stop bombing Gaza, following Hamas’s agreement to release all remaining Israeli hostages as part of a 20-point peace plan. The move marks a significant breakthrough in the longstanding conflict, but key obstacles remain, including Hamas’s refusal to disarm.
“Israel must immediately stop the bombing of Gaza, so that we can get the Hostages out safely and quickly!” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform. “We are already in discussions on details to be worked out. This is not about Gaza alone, this is about long sought PEACE in the Middle East.”
Hamas’s response to Trump’s peace plan, which was presented to Qatari mediators, accepted some terms, including the release of all Israeli hostages, but demanded further negotiations on other key elements. The militant group reiterated its commitment to handing over the administration of the Gaza Strip to an independent Palestinian body.
Speaking after Hamas issued its response, Senior Hamas official Mousa Abu Marzouk told Al Jazeera that the group would not disarm before the Israeli “occupation” ended. “We appreciate the Arab, Islamic, and international efforts, as well as the efforts of US President Donald Trump, calling for an end to the war on the Gaza Strip, the exchange of prisoners, [and] the immediate entry of aid,” the statement added.
Trump had initially given Hamas three to four days to accept his peace plan, warning that failure to comply would bring “all hell” upon the militant group. However, he later extended the deadline, offering Hamas a “last chance” to accept the deal.
The Israeli government, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, has pledged to cooperate with Trump on the peace plan, but the details of the proposed agreement remain uncertain. As the world watches with bated breath, one thing is clear: the fate of the Middle East hangs precariously in the balance.
