- South Australians rally around the family, leaving porch lights on in a show of support for the heartbroken loved ones
South Australians are reeling in shock and sadness as the search for missing four-year-old August “Gus” Lamont comes to a devastating end. The little boy was last seen playing outside his family’s remote sheep station in the state’s Mid North, and despite a massive week-long search effort, police have made the agonising decision to scale back the operation.
“Whilst we’ve all been hoping for a miracle, that miracle has not eventuated,” Assistant Commissioner Ian Parrott said, his voice heavy with emotion. “We’re confident that we’ve done absolutely everything we can to locate Gus within the search area.”
The search for Gus has been one of the largest and most intense in South Australian history, with police, SES, volunteers, and the Australian Army scouring the vast and unforgiving terrain by air and ground. Despite a footprint being discovered on Tuesday, no further significant evidence has emerged, and the chances of finding Gus alive are dwindling.
Gus’s family have described him as a shy but adventurous child, a good walker who had never left the property before. His disappearance has left them shattered, and the community is rallying around them in support. South Australians are being asked to leave a light on – a glowing show of support for Gus and his heartbroken family.
“We will continue to follow every line of inquiry,” Parrott vowed. “We won’t stop.” Gus is Caucasian with long blonde curly hair, and was last seen wearing a grey sun hat, cobalt blue long-sleeve shirt with a yellow Minion on the front, light grey pants and boots. Anyone with any information is urged to contact the police.
As the sun sets on the search for Gus, the community is coming together to show their support for the family. Hundreds of porch lights have been left on, a beacon of hope in the darkness. It’s a small act, but one that means the world to the family of this little boy who has captured the hearts of the nation.
