A shameless tradie has been sentenced for his part in a brazen sex act with his girlfriend on a packed Air New Zealand flight, where the couple repeatedly ignored warnings from cabin crew and even pretended to be asleep to continue their sleazy foreplay in front of horrified passengers.
Reuben Jeremy Finn, 30, was in court on Tuesday to face the consequences of the shocking mid-air incident which took place on a 9:15 am flight from Auckland on November 13, 2024.
The Nelson District Court heard that shortly after take-off, Finn and his partner, Bronte LeLievre, 32, began “kissing excessively” before the situation escalated dramatically. Witnesses on the flight reported seeing Finn with his hands inside his partner’s bra and later down her pants as she reacted to his movements, all while surrounded by 48 other passengers, including children, and cabin crew.
Flight attendants were forced to intervene multiple times after receiving complaints, telling the couple to stop and warning them the pilot would be notified. In a bizarre move, the pair then pretended to be asleep while continuing their indecent act.
Police were waiting on the tarmac when the flight landed and the couple was arrested. The court heard the shocking in-flight incident was part of a wider crime spree for Finn, who also admitted to stealing courier packages from a porch and multiple shoplifting offences. A meth pipe was also found on him during a search in custody.
In a pathetic attempt to explain the sordid behaviour, Finn’s defence lawyer said his client’s life had spiralled out of control due to a severe meth and gambling addiction. The court was told Finn had lost more than $100,000 on online pokies and also struggled with ADHD and compulsive behaviour.
The judge noted Finn’s shocking criminal history, which included 21 prior convictions, before sentencing him to six months’ community detention with a strict 8pm to 5am curfew, along with 12 months of intensive supervision. His partner, Ms LeLievre, is due to face court in November on related charges.
