Sydney has just sweltered through its warmest night in months, with the mercury soaring to a staggering 28 degrees at midnight. The Harbour City’s residents were caught off guard as a sudden weather change brought hot winds and cloud cover, causing temperatures to spike sharply.
“A blanket of cloud trapping warm air near the surface and a midnight wind change just caused Sydney to experience its warmest night in seven months,” Weatherzone explained. The warm winds reached gusts of up to 50km/h, making it feel like a hot summer’s night.
According to analysis by Weatherzone, the lowest temperature seen last night and going into this morning was 22.2 degrees, a whopping 8.5 degrees higher than the average temperature for this time of year.
The warm weather is set to continue, with Sydneysiders bracing for a scorching weekend. Temperatures are expected to reach close to 30 degrees over the next three days, making it feel like summer has arrived early. While winds could make it feel slightly cooler, the heat will be intense.
“While the oceans to the east are still relatively cool in October, rising temperatures over Australia’s interior acts as a source of heat that can get pushed towards the coast under certain weather patterns,” Weatherzone’s Ben Domensino explained.
So, make sure to grab your sunnies and sunscreen, Sydney, as the heat is on! But don’t worry, a reprieve is on the way, with rain and a wind change expected on Sunday and Monday. However, don’t get too comfortable, as Weatherzone is predicting another hot spell by next Friday, with temperatures expected to reach a sizzling 31 degrees.
