South Australians are in for a wild ride this week as the temperature is set to soar to a scorching 45C in the North West Pastoral District on Sunday. The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a warning for severe thunderstorms, extreme fire dangers, and strong, blistering winds to pass over the state, driven by a low-pressure trough.
“We are looking at temperatures eight to 15 degrees above the average,” senior meteorologist Miriam Bradbury warned. “It’s going to be a hot and windy week for millions across the country.”
The heat will be accompanied by blustery north-northwesterly winds, which are expected to hit several states. “Warm, gusty north to northwesterly winds will stream across parts of South Australia, Victoria, Tasmania, and even parts of NSW,” Ms Bradbury said.
But it’s not just South Australians facing a wild week of weather. Maximum temperatures forecast to vary by a whopping 15C across Australia, with temperatures in the Victorian capital set to seesaw. Melbourne is expected to close out the week with a maximum of just 19C, while Adelaide is forecast for a maximum of 21C on Tuesday, rising to 29C on Wednesday, before falling back to 21C on Friday.
In Sydney, the maximum temperature was 23C on Monday – by Friday, it’s tipped to rise to 32C. Brisbane, meanwhile, is set to be a bit more consistent, with a maximum 26C forecast for Tuesday, rising to 28C on Friday.
As warm air from the Australian interior collides with cold fronts sweeping across the southeast, the fluctuations are expected to continue throughout the week. Hobart temperatures are expected to rise from 17C on Tuesday to 26C on Thursday before falling again, while Canberra temperatures will likely rise from 22C to 27C by Thursday.
In the west, Perth is expected to be hit by temperatures of 29C by Friday, while in the north, Darwin temperatures will stay in the 35C range while fighting storms. It’s going to be a hot week for the country, and residents are advised to take precautions to stay safe in the sweltering heat.
