In a shocking display of maternal monstrosity, a South Australian woman has admitted to faking her six-year-old son’s cancer diagnosis in a bid to raise thousands of dollars from well-meaning donors. The 45-year-old woman, who appeared in the Adelaide Magistrates Court via video link from custody, pleaded guilty to one count of engaging in acts likely to cause harm to her young son and 10 counts of deception.
The woman’s deceitful scheme was laid bare in court, with prosecutors revealing that she had shaved her son’s head and eyebrows, placed him in a wheelchair, and covered him in bandages to make it appear as though he was undergoing radiotherapy treatment. The court heard that the woman’s actions were designed to garner sympathy and raise funds from unsuspecting donors, with her scheme netting a staggering $11,500 in just under a month.
In a heartbreaking post uploaded to Facebook last November, the woman wrote about her son’s supposed cancer diagnosis, claiming it was “unbearable” to see him “go through this”. She penned a maudlin message, declaring: “A mothers love burns from the inside out something you will never see only feel. I will take the pain away from you as much as I can so you do not have to feel it.”
However, the court heard that the woman’s words were nothing more than a callous fabrication, designed to tug at the heartstrings of potential donors. The woman’s husband was initially charged alongside her, but his charges were dropped earlier this year. The woman will remain in custody and is due to appear in the state’s District Court next month.
