Transgender swimmer Lia Thomas has launched a furious attack on President Donald Trump’s new ban on biological males competing in women’s sports, angrily hitting out at critics and sensationally claiming she holds no physical advantage over her female rivals.
In some of her first comments on the deeply divisive issue since Trump’s return to the White House, Thomas took aim at the President’s executive order to ‘keep men out of women’s sports’ without mentioning him by name.
‘You don’t get to pick and choose when you see me as a woman,’ Thomas fumed in a stunning interview. ‘You don’t get to say, “You can be a woman in these situations, but not in these” because you would never do that to a cis woman.’
The former University of Pennsylvania swimmer, who won a national championship in 2022 after previously competing on the men’s team, then made the outrageous claim that she does not have a biological advantage over female-born athletes.
‘There are massive losses to muscle mass, strength and endurance,’ she insisted, referring to her hormone-replacement therapy. She blasted any suggestion she shouldn’t be allowed to compete as ‘both transphobic and not reflective of the realities of being trans’.
The explosive interview comes as a huge blow to Thomas personally, after it was revealed her own university has now sided with the Trump administration and agreed to strip her of her past titles.
Thomas’s participation in the sport became a flashpoint in the culture wars, with female competitors expressing deep unease at sharing a locker room with her and questioning the fairness of the competition.
In a more personal moment, Thomas also revealed she first came out as trans to her girlfriend after they attended a Pride parade together as allies. ‘That evening when we got home, I came out to her… that was a very huge milestone, and she was incredibly supportive,’ she said.
