Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s plane was forced to make a dramatic unscheduled landing in Missouri after a crew member suffered a concussion when luggage fell from the overhead locker.
The RAAF flight, which was carrying Albanese back to Australia from the US, landed at St Louis Lambert International Airport, where the injured crew member was rushed to hospital.
According to sources, the crew member was hit in the head by luggage from the overhead locker and suffered a concussion. They are currently receiving medical treatment.
Albanese, who was on board the flight, had just left a meeting with President Donald Trump in Washington, where the two leaders signed an agreement on rare earth and critical minerals.
Despite the dramatic incident, Albanese had earlier labelled his meeting with Trump as “very successful” and said he got on “very well” with the President.
“We have been very focused on outcomes, the personal relationship with President Trump has gone very well, and it was a very successful couple of days I’ve had,” Albanese told Sunrise on Wednesday morning.
However, the meeting was not without incident, with an awkward exchange between Trump and Australia’s US ambassador Kevin Rudd. Trump was heard saying he didn’t like Rudd, but Albanese played down the incident.
The Prime Minister’s office has yet to comment on the incident, but it is understood that Albanese and his staff are safe and well.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety of the Prime Minister and his staff while travelling, and an investigation is likely to be launched into the incident.
