Passengers on a Sydney bus were left traumatised after a man was stabbed in a shocking ‘random’ attack in the early hours of Thursday morning. The incident occurred on a route 428 bus travelling on Addison Rd in Marrickville, with witnesses describing the chaotic scene as ‘blood all over the floor’.
According to Superintendent Despa Fitzgerald, the alleged attacker, a 54-year-old man of Asian appearance, boarded the bus and suddenly stabbed a 51-year-old passenger without warning. ‘There had been no interaction between the men before the attack,’ she confirmed.
One passenger, who wished to remain anonymous, recounted the horrific moment: ‘I was scared to death! I’m never taking the bus again. The alleged attacker just walked onto the bus, looked around, and then stabbed the victim without saying a word.’
The victim, who suffered serious but stable injuries, was rushed to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital after passengers rushed to his aid. ‘Everyone was terrified before the door was opened,’ said the witness, who called triple-0 as the alleged attacker fled the scene.
Police arrested the alleged attacker later that day, seizing a knife from him, although it is yet to be confirmed if it was the weapon used in the attack. Superintendent Fitzgerald reassured the public, stating, ‘We are confident that the person involved is now at Newtown Police Station, and we want to assure members of the public to feel safe on our transport network.’
The incident has left the community shaken, with many expressing concern about the safety of public transport. As one witness so eloquently put it, ‘I’ve been taking this route twice a day for a long time, but now I’m even scared of hearing the sound of a car door opening.’
