- Two 17-year-old boys rushed to hospital with stab wounds after brutal fight breaks out at Broadmeadows Railway Station
- Screwdriver and machete used in the attack, with one of the victims undergoing emergency surgery
- Two teenagers arrested, including one charged with affray, intentionally causing injury, and recklessly causing injury
In a shocking display of violence, two teenage boys were left fighting for their lives after a vicious brawl erupted at the Broadmeadows Railway Station in Melbourne’s north on Wednesday afternoon.
Emergency services received multiple calls to triple-0 just after 3pm, reporting an altercation between two groups of young men. When police arrived, they found two 17-year-old boys with stab wounds, including one who had been attacked with a screwdriver.
The victims were rushed to hospital, where one underwent surgery for non-life-threatening injuries. Witnesses described seeing other weapons, including a machete, although only the screwdriver was recovered at the scene.
Detectives wasted no time in tracking down the alleged perpetrators, arresting a 19-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy at the nearby Glenroy Railway Station just 30 minutes later. The 17-year-old has been charged with affray, intentionally causing injury, and recklessly causing injury, and was bailed to appear at a children’s court at a later date. The 19-year-old was released without charge, pending further investigations.
In a stark warning, Detective Sergeant Raynor Gunton said, “This is sadly another example where young men have attended a public place in broad daylight armed with knives looking to cause trouble. The victims in this incident were both children and are lucky their injuries were not more serious.”
The incident marks the second time in as many weeks that violence has erupted in the area, following a separate brawl at the Broadmeadows Shopping Centre involving machetes two weeks ago.
Police have vowed to increase patrols in the area, urging anyone with information to come forward and contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or via their website.
