A frantic search for a 25-year-old fisherman is under way after a boat capsized in the rough waters off Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula coast late last night. The five-and-a-half metre fibreglass boat, carrying two men, overturned around one kilometre offshore of Mornington, according to police.
Emergency services were called to Schnapper Point Drive about 11.15pm, and one man was rescued by another boat. He was assessed by paramedics and taken to hospital with hypothermia. The second man remains missing, and a massive search operation is under way to find him.
‘It’s a desperate situation, and we’re doing everything we can to find the missing man,’ said a police spokesperson. ‘We’re investigating whether a potential wake from another vessel caused the boat to capsize, but our main priority is finding the missing man and bringing him home to his family.’
The search operation involves Water Police, Air Wing, and Uniform officers, with assistance from HEMS, Life Saving Victoria, and the coast guard. The search continues this morning, with rescue teams scouring the waters off Mornington in a bid to find any sign of the missing man.
‘We urge anyone with information to come forward and assist us in our search,’ said the police spokesperson. ‘We’re working tirelessly to find the missing man, and we won’t give up until we’ve exhausted all avenues.’
