A disturbing incident has shaken the Australian cricket team during their Women’s World Cup campaign in India, with two players allegedly being stalked and groped by a motorcyclist near their team hotel.
According to Cricket Australia, the incident occurred on Thursday morning, just a day after Australia’s six-wicket win over England. The players, who have not been named, were reportedly walking to a cafe when the alleged stalker approached them.
“CA can confirm two members of the Australian women’s team were approached and touched inappropriately by a motorcyclist while walking to a cafe in Indore,” a Cricket Australia spokesperson said.
The incident was reported to police, who launched an investigation and arrested the alleged perpetrator. The man has been charged under sections 74 and 78 of the Indian criminal code, which deal with assault and stalking.
In a statement, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) condemned the incident and assured that the safety of the players was their top priority. “This is a deeply regrettable and isolated incident,” said Devajit Saikia, secretary of the BCCI.
“India has always been known for its warmth, hospitality, and care towards all guests. We maintain a zero-tolerance policy towards such acts. We appreciate the swift and effective action taken by the Madhya Pradesh Police in apprehending the accused.”
The incident has sent shockwaves through the cricket community, with many players and officials expressing their outrage and support for the victims. The Australian team has been offered support and counseling, and the players are believed to be okay to continue playing in the tournament.
Australia went on to win their group stage match against South Africa on Saturday, but the incident has cast a shadow over the team’s campaign. The players will leave Indore on Sunday and head to Navi Mumbai for their semi-final match against India on Thursday.
