STORM CHAOS: Brisbane Wakes to Rain and Darkness as 5000 Remain Without Power After Violent Weekend
- Brisbane residents woke up to rain and plummeting temperatures after Sunday’s storms left thousands without power
- Two schools remain closed and power lines are still down in some areas, with Energex crews working to restore electricity
- A welcome cool change has brought relief from the scorching 38-degree heat, but fire bans remain in place across much of Queensland
Brisbane residents woke up to a gloomy morning, with rain and plummeting temperatures bringing a welcome reprieve from the scorching heat that gripped the city just yesterday. However, the aftermath of Sunday’s violent storms is still being felt, with over 5000 people remaining without power and two schools closed due to damage.
The city’s western suburbs were the hardest hit, with Indooroopilly, Kenmore, and Fig Tree Pocket bearing the brunt of the destruction. Energex crews have been working tirelessly to restore power, but their efforts have been hindered by the sheer scale of the damage and the need to address additional safety issues that have arisen during the clean-up.
“Although we’ve managed to restore power to around 120,000 customers since Sunday, we’re still dealing with a significant number of outages,” an Energex spokesperson said. “We understand the frustration and discomfort this is causing, and we’re doing everything we can to get the lights back on as quickly as possible.”
The rain has brought some relief to the region, helping to dampen a fire that had been burning on North Stradbroke Island overnight. However, fire bans remain in place across much of Queensland, with hot and windy weather conditions expected to persist in some areas.
The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast a top of 22 degrees for Brisbane today, with up to 45mm of rain expected to fall. The Gold Coast is also expected to experience mild and wet conditions, bringing a welcome end to the sweltering heat that has gripped the region in recent days.
As the clean-up efforts continue, residents are being urged to remain vigilant and to take necessary precautions to stay safe. With the full extent of the damage still being assessed, it’s clear that this storm has left its mark on Brisbane – and it will be some time before the city returns to normal.
