A former NSW police officer has been killed in a shocking alleged hit-and-run incident while walking her dog in the small town of Ulmarra, northern NSW. Lisa Ward, 55, a well-known and respected member of the community, was struck by a white 4WD on Coldstream St about 4.50pm on Tuesday.
According to police, Ward had taken a photo of the vehicle’s number plate after witnessing it being driven recklessly. Moments later, the 4WD allegedly turned on her, leaving her with serious injuries. Despite the efforts of paramedics, Ward died at the scene.
A crime scene was established, and an investigation was launched. Police located and seized a 4WD in South Grafton about 7.40am on Wednesday and arrested a 50-year-old man. He was taken to Coffs Harbour Police Station, where he was assisting police with inquiries.
An Ulmarra resident described Ward as a “lovely person” who regularly walked her dog near the area every afternoon. “She was a well-known and respected member of the community,” the resident said. “It’s just devastating.”
Ward was a former officer attached to the Coffs/Clarence Police District, who had retired a few years ago. Her death has sent shockwaves through the community, with many paying tribute to her dedication and service.
Police are urging anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers. The investigation is ongoing, and the 50-year-old man is yet to be charged.
