- The incident has sparked outrage and raised concerns about the safety of children in care
In a shocking incident that has sent shockwaves through the community, a childcare worker has been accused of slapping a three-year-old child in the face at a centre in Sydney’s north-west.
Police were called to the centre in Dundas on Tuesday after a report was made about the alleged assault. The 43-year-old woman was arrested at her home on Dorahy Street in Dundas the following morning and taken to Gladesville Police Station.
“Families deserve to know their children are safe, respected, and nurtured when they attend childcare, preschool, or outside school care,” Acting Education and Early Learning Minister Courtney Houssos said in a statement.
The childcare worker was charged with assaulting a school student while attending school and common assault. She was granted conditional bail and will face the Burwood Local Court on December 8.
This disturbing incident has highlighted the need for greater vigilance in the early childhood education sector, which has faced national scrutiny over failures to keep children safe and meet standards. The NSW government has recently introduced nation-leading child safety reforms, including a 900 per cent increase to maximum penalties for dodgy providers and compulsory child protection training.
In a heartbreaking development, the alleged attack has left the young victim and their family reeling. The incident has sparked a wave of outrage and concern in the community, with many calling for greater accountability from childcare providers.
The safety of children in care is a critical issue that cannot be taken lightly. As the childcare sector continues to grapple with the fallout from this incident, one thing is clear: parents have a right to know that their children are safe and protected while in care.
