A horrific car crash has left a woman fighting for her life after a vehicle ploughed into a busy food court in Launceston’s CBD. The incident occurred at approximately 12:20pm on Wednesday, with witnesses describing the scene as “absolute chaos” as emergency services rushed to the scene.
Photos from the scene show the white ute had crashed through the shopfront glass pane and part of a brick wall before coming to a stop at the far end of the food court. The vehicle’s occupants, including the driver, were taken to hospital, with the woman’s injuries considered critical.
“I just saw a car coming in, and I just felt shock,” said Carmen Thu, a witness who was working at Thai Express, a restaurant inside the food court. “My husband was actually out the back, so the car actually banged into the back, the wall has collapsed.”
Ms Thu described the moment the car crashed into the food court, saying a woman was sitting down eating when she was injured. “I just saw her, she was sitting down, and then the car came in,” she said.
Police, the fire service, and paramedics are all responding to the incident, with investigations into the cause of the crash ongoing. The public has been asked to avoid the area.
