A small community in NSW’s Riverina region is reeling in shock after a 39-year-old pilot was killed in a light plane crash yesterday. The ultra-light aircraft plummeted into a paddock on Nullagong Rd, near the Cobb Hwy, about 30km north of Hay, at approximately 11am on Wednesday.
Paramedics rushed to the scene, where they found the pilot, the sole occupant of the plane, with serious injuries. Despite their desperate attempts to save him with CPR, the man was airlifted to Royal Melbourne Hospital, where he tragically succumbed to his injuries.
‘It’s just utter devastation,’ said a local resident, who wished to remain anonymous. ‘We’re all in shock. The pilot was a well-known member of the community, and this is just a terrible tragedy.’
A crime scene has been established, and investigations are ongoing. Authorities are working to determine the cause of the crash, with a report to be prepared for the coroner.
‘We urge anyone with information or who may have witnessed the crash to come forward,’ said a police spokesperson. ‘Our thoughts are with the pilot’s family and friends during this difficult time.’
