ALERT: Deadly Alfalfa Sprouts Recalled Across Australia After 44 People Fall Ill with Salmonella – Check Your Fridge NOW!
- Urgent recall issued for Parilla Fresh alfalfa sprouts sold at Coles, Woolworths, IGA, and independent grocers
- At least 44 people nationwide have been infected with Salmonella, including 18 in NSW, two in SA, 15 in QLD, and nine in VIC
- Consumers warned to check their fridges immediately, as eating the affected sprouts can cause severe illness, particularly in infants, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems
A nationwide recall has been issued for Parilla Fresh alfalfa sprouts after a spike in cases of Salmonella contamination left dozens of Australians fighting for their lives. The urgent warning comes as health authorities scramble to contain the outbreak, which has already infected at least 44 people across the country.
The affected sprouts were sold in 125g containers with use-by dates up to November 20, 2025, and were packaged under various brand names, including Aussie Sprouts Alfalfa Sprouts, Hugo’s Alfalfa Onion & Garlic Sprouts, and Hugo’s Salad Sprouts. Parilla Fresh has pulled its products from shelves, and consumers are being warned to check their fridges immediately.
“We urge consumers to take this recall very seriously,” said NSW Health Director Keira Glasgow. “Salmonella can cause severe illness, particularly in vulnerable populations such as infants, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. If you have any of these products in your fridge, please discard them immediately.”
Symptoms of Salmonella infection typically appear within six to 72 hours and can include headache, fever, stomach cramps, diarrhoea, nausea, and vomiting. While most people recover within a week with rest and fluids, some may require antibiotics or hospitalisation.
Health authorities are continuing to investigate the outbreak alongside the NSW Department of Primary Industries and other jurisdictions. Anyone experiencing prolonged or severe symptoms is advised to seek medical attention, while those needing non-urgent advice can contact healthdirect or speak with their GP or pharmacist.
As the investigation unfolds, Australians are being warned to remain vigilant and take precautions to protect themselves and their loved ones. With the festive season just around the corner, the recall serves as a timely reminder of the importance of food safety and the need for consumers to stay informed.
