Tragedy at Phillip Island: Man Dies After Rescue Attempt at Surf Beach
PHILLIP ISLAND — A rescue effort by members of the public ended in heartbreak this afternoon on the Victorian coast, following the death of a man at Phillip Island.
Emergency services were called to the popular Surf Beach shortly after 1:10 pm following reports of a swimmer in distress.
It is understood that bystanders spotted the unresponsive man in the water and managed to drag him onto the shore.
Witnesses at the scene immediately commenced CPR in a desperate bid to save his life before paramedics arrived.
Despite the best efforts of the public and emergency responders, the man could not be revived and was declared deceased at the scene.
Victoria Police have confirmed that the death is not being treated as suspicious. The man has yet to be formally identified.
Police will now prepare a report for the Coroner to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
