A devastating bushfire has ravaged a beachside community near St Helens, Tasmania, leaving a trail of destruction and displacement in its wake. At least two properties have been destroyed, with hundreds of residents forced to flee for their lives as the out-of-control blaze threatened to engulf their homes.
The fire, which started on Tuesday afternoon, quickly escalated to emergency level before being downgraded overnight, only to be upgraded again on Wednesday morning. Authorities are still battling to contain the blaze, with Tasmania Fire Service (TFS) incident controller David Casteller revealing that crews faced “really challenging conditions” last night.
“In a heartbreaking development, we’ve lost two confirmed houses in that fire,” Casteller said, his voice laced with emotion. “The crews faced really challenging conditions last night. But given the conditions that our crews faced last night, they have done an outstanding job, and thankfully, no injuries.”
The fire has already burned through a massive 1,400 hectares of land, with strong winds and erratic conditions making it difficult for firefighters to contain the blaze. Residents in the affected areas have been urged to stay updated with the latest advice, as authorities struggle to bring the situation under control.
Meanwhile, Break O’Day Mayor Mick Tucker described the evacuation centre at the Break O’Day Community Stadium as “busy overnight”, with hundreds of people seeking shelter and assistance. “It would be fair to say that we’ve had a few hundred people through the door,” he said. “A lot of people stayed overnight, and the Navy Cadets alongside opened up, and they’ve got people sleeping in there in their accommodation.”
Tasmania Police have also issued a stern warning to residents, urging them to avoid the area and not to attempt to return to their properties until it is safe to do so. “While I appreciate that people want to get in and check on their properties or want to get home, it’s just too dangerous at the current time,” Inspector Luke Manhood said.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but authorities are hopeful that fresh fire crews from the south and additional aircraft from the mainland will help to bring the situation under control. With weather conditions expected to be more favourable for firefighting on Wednesday, authorities are holding out hope that they can finally get the upper hand on the devastating blaze.
