Tragedy has struck at one of America’s most prestigious universities, as a crazed gunman unleashed a deadly shooting spree at Brown University, leaving two students dead and nine others fighting for their lives.
The horror unfolded in the Barus & Holley building, a seven-storey structure housing the School of Engineering and Physics Department, at approximately 4pm local time on Saturday. The suspect, described as a male in his 30s, dressed in black, remains at large, with police combing the campus and surrounding areas in a desperate bid to track him down.
“I’m just in here shaking,” said Brown senior biochemistry student Alex Bruce, who was working on a final research project in his dorm directly across the street from the building when the shooting occurred. “I feared for a friend who I thought was inside the engineering building at the time. It’s just so surreal and terrifying.”
Chiangheng Chien, a doctoral student in engineering, was in a nearby lab when the shooting erupted. “We hid under our desks and turned off the lights after receiving an alert about the shooting,” he recounted. “It was like something out of a nightmare.”
Mayor Brett Smiley has urged residents to stay indoors and avoid the area until the suspect is captured, warning that the area remains an active crime scene. “We have all available resources mobilised to find the suspect,” he vowed.
US President Donald Trump has been briefed on the incident and has pledged FBI support. “God bless the victims and the families of the victims!” he posted on Truth Social.
The Brown University campus, normally a haven for learning and academic excellence, was transformed into a scene of chaos and terror, with armed police patrolling the streets and emergency vehicles lining the roads.
As the investigation continues, students and staff are left to grapple with the aftermath of this senseless tragedy, which has left a community in mourning and a nation in shock.
