A devastating accident has claimed the life of a 17-year-old girl at a popular beachside lookout on the Sunshine Coast. Emergency services were called to Moffat Beach about 6:40pm on Saturday after reports a teenage girl had fallen from a cliff near a lookout on Queen of Colonies Parade.
The teenager was found in a life-threatening condition with serious head injuries and despite attempts to revive her, she sadly died at the scene. A second woman sustained a minor injury while trying to assist the teenager before emergency services arrived.
According to Detective Acting Inspector Peter Hocken, a group of teenage girls had been watching the sunset at Moffat Beach. “They went over the railing to get a better view of the sunset, taking photos,” he said. “They’ve proceeded to make their way back up the embankment and unfortunately a 17-year-old has slipped and fallen 30 metres onto the rocks below.”
Detective Hocken described the situation as “very, very confronting”. “They’re young girls … doing nothing other than enjoying life,” he said. “Unfortunately, one wrong footstep has caused her to fall.”
The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, with friends and family left to mourn the loss of a young life. As the investigation into the tragedy continues, the community is left to come to terms with the devastating consequences of a simple mistake.
