- NSW Premier Chris Minns urges Australians to donate blood, especially type O negative, as hospitals struggle to cope with influx of injured
- Federal MP Allegra Spender calls on Australians to ‘check in’ with Jewish friends and colleagues, saying ‘we are here for you’
- At least 15 people killed and dozens injured in terrorist attack on Bondi Beach during Hanukkah celebrations
The people of Australia are reeling in shock and grief as the full extent of the Bondi Beach terror attack becomes clear. As the death toll rises to 15, with dozens more injured, the community is rallying together to support the victims and their families.
In a heartfelt plea, NSW Premier Chris Minns implored Australians to donate blood, specifically type O negative, to help hospitals cope with the influx of injured people. “Many people are asking how they can help,” he said. “The first thing, of course, is to listen to New South Wales Police and emergency services. If you’re looking for something practical to do, you could give blood.”
Federal MP Allegra Spender, whose electorate includes Bondi Beach, echoed the Premier’s call, urging Australians to reach out to their Jewish friends and colleagues. “To the Jewish community: we collectively are here for you,” she said, her voice cracking with emotion. “Reach out to anyone you know in the Jewish community today – friends, colleagues – and just say, ‘We are here for you.'”
The senseless attack, which occurred on the first night of Hanukkah, has sent shockwaves throughout the nation. Lifeblood Australia, the branch of the Red Cross responsible for collecting blood, has transferred blood from several states to Sydney and is desperately seeking type O negative donors. “Our thoughts are with the injured, their families, and those who have lost loved ones because of this tragedy,” it said in a statement.
As the community struggles to come to terms with the tragedy, fundraising efforts are underway to support the victims and their families. A GoFundMe page has been set up for vetted fundraisers, with one campaign for the man who bravely tackled one of the shooters already raising over $300,000. Another campaign for the family of a 10-year-old girl who lost her life in the attack has raised around $30,000.
Sydney’s Lord Mayor Clover Moore summed up the mood of the nation, saying, “Our heart is broken. In the coming days, please show each other great care and compassion. We cannot let this hateful act of terror divide us.” As the nation mourns, one thing is clear: Australia stands united in its support for the Jewish community and its determination to overcome this senseless act of violence.
