Bondi Beach Massacre: Pro-Gun Americans Slam Australia’s Gun Laws as Death Toll Rises to 15, Including 10-Year-Old Girl
- Australian authorities face criticism from overseas, with some pro-gun Americans claiming the country’s strict gun laws are to blame for the tragedy
- The death toll has risen to 15, with a 10-year-old girl among the victims, and police have confirmed one of the alleged shooters was a licensed firearm holder
- Australian leaders vow to review and strengthen gun laws, with NSW Premier Chris Minns saying “we need to make sure the firearms legislation in New South Wales is fit for purpose”
In the wake of the devastating mass shooting at Bondi Beach, pro-gun voices in the United States have sparked outrage by seizing on the tragedy to criticise Australia’s gun laws. Despite the fact that the alleged shooter was a licensed firearm holder, these critics claim that the country’s crackdown on civilian gun ownership is to blame for the horror that unfolded.
But Australian authorities are hitting back, with NSW Premier Chris Minns vowing to review and strengthen gun laws in the state. “We need to make sure the firearms legislation in New South Wales is fit for purpose,” Minns said. “That does mean restricting firearms for the general public. You don’t need them on New South Wales streets.”
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has also pledged to put “tougher gun laws” on the agenda of the National Cabinet, including limits on the number of guns that can be licensed by one person. “People can be radicalised over a period of time. Licences should not be in perpetuity,” Albanese said.
In a stark contrast to the United States, where mass shootings have become a grim reality, Australia has a long history of taking action to prevent such tragedies. The country’s crackdown on gun ownership following the 1996 Port Arthur Massacre has been credited with reducing gun violence and saving countless lives.
Despite this, pro-gun Americans have taken to social media to claim that Australia’s strict gun laws are responsible for the Bondi Beach tragedy. “Australia has among the toughest gun laws in the world, and ‘diversity is their strength’. Pray for the victims, and for wisdom to follow,” one critic wrote.
Another wrote, “Austra**ians are disarmed and defenceless thanks to strict gun laws. This is what happens when only criminals have guns. Absolute madness.”
But Australian leaders are having none of it, pointing out that the country’s gun laws have been instrumental in preventing mass shootings. “We’ve seen 23 major mass shootings in the United States since 1996, and every single one of them was on the same scale as Bondi,” one official noted.
“The point is, every single one of these examples was on the same scale as Bondi. Some were even more horrifying, impossible as that sounds,” they added.
The tragedy at Bondi Beach has sparked a national conversation about gun laws and violence in Australia, with many calling for stricter measures to prevent such atrocities in the future. As the country mourns the loss of 15 innocent lives, one thing is clear: Australia will not be swayed by the misguided views of pro-gun Americans.
