In a shocking turn of events, a 59-year-old man has been charged with serious assault after allegedly wielding a knife at police in Cairns. The dramatic incident unfolded at the intersection of Elphinstone St and Ramsey Dr in Kanimbla at around 10:30am on November 18.
According to Queensland Police Service (QPS), officers were called to the scene following reports of a man armed with a knife. As they attempted to apprehend the suspect, he allegedly approached them while holding the knife, prompting an officer to discharge their firearm.
The man was struck below the shoulder and provided with immediate medical assistance at the scene before being taken to Cairns Hospital in a critical condition. In a statement, QPS said: “Neither officer was physically injured during the incident.”
The 59-year-old, from Mooroobool, has been charged with two counts of serious assault police whilst armed and is due to face the Cairns Magistrates Court at a later date. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
