A Los Angeles district attorney revealed on Tuesday that Nick Reiner will face two counts of first-degree murder for the brutal killings of his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner. The couple, both 75 and 71 respectively, were found dead in their Los Angeles home on Sunday afternoon, sparking a massive police investigation.
According to prosecutors, evidence gathered by the Los Angeles Police Department led homicide detectives to Nick Reiner, who was taken into custody without incident. District attorney Nathan Hochman said at a press conference that the charges carry a maximum penalty of life in prison without the possibility of parole, or otherwise capital punishment.
Nick Reiner, a screenwriter and co-writer of the 2016 film Being Charlie, had spoken publicly about his years-long struggle with substance abuse and homelessness. He had also been seen quarrelling with his parents on Saturday night at a holiday party hosted by comedian Conan O’Brien.
The 32-year-old has remained in custody at a Los Angeles County lock-up since Sunday night, and his lawyer, prominent Los Angeles defence lawyer Alan Jackson, said his client had yet to be medically cleared for his initial court appearance on Tuesday.
Tributes have poured in for Rob Reiner, a Hollywood legend and champion of liberal causes, who directed classic films including This is Spinal Tap, The Princess Bride, and A Few Good Men. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said, “This is a devastating loss for our city and our country… Rob Reiner’s contributions reverberate throughout American culture and society.”
As an actor, Rob Reiner was best remembered for his role on the 70s television comedy hit All in the Family as Mike “Meathead” Stivic, the son-in-law and liberal foil of the bigoted lead character. Michele Reiner, a former photographer, had captured the image of Donald Trump that appears on the cover of his book Trump: The Art of the Deal.
Nick Reiner’s arrest has sent shockwaves through the Hollywood community, with many struggling to comprehend the motives behind the brutal murders. As the investigation continues, the Reiner family’s dark secrets and troubled past are slowly coming to light.
