Ahmed Al Ahmed, the heroic bystander who took down one of the terrorists responsible for the horrific Bondi massacre, has been revealed as a former Syrian soldier trained in war-torn combat zones. The 35-year-old’s incredible bravery has earned him widespread praise, with thousands of dollars raised for his recovery and messages of thanks pouring in.
According to his father, Mohammad Fatih Al Ahmed, Ahmed Al Ahmed honed his skills in the Syrian army, where he served in the interior ministry and later joined the police force. The gruelling training, which included months of intense physical conditioning and combat simulations, prepared him for the moment he would face in Bondi.
On that fateful day, Al Ahmed displayed unwavering courage, wrestling the rifle away from gunman Sajid Akram after he ran out of ammunition. Dramatic footage captures the moment Al Ahmed lunged at the gunman, disarming him and likely saving countless lives.
Locals have rallied around Al Ahmed, leaving bunches of flowers and heartfelt messages of thanks outside his tobacco shop in Sutherland. “Wishing a speedy recovery,” one card read. “Thank you so much for your incredible bravery,” another card wrote.
Al Ahmed’s humility and kindness have also been revealed, with surrounding shop owners describing him as a generous tipper who always supported local businesses. “He has always been a lovely person, he supports local businesses … he’s a good human,” Alex Mur617fet, 35, a barista from a nearby coffee shop, told NewsWire.
Ahmed Al Ahmed is likely to receive a bravery award from Governor-General Sam Mostyn, with many already hailing him as a national hero. “It would be staggering that he wouldn’t be receiving some form of bravery award … I think he’s been nominated many, many times already and in the context of what we saw, of course he is a brave man who has done something truly heroic,” Ms Mostyn said.
In a heartfelt message from his hospital bed, Al Ahmed thanked everyone for their efforts and expressed his gratitude to Allah, saying “May Allah reward you and grant wellbeing.” As he continues to recover from his injuries, Australians from all walks of life are rallying around this true hero, showering him with praise and admiration for his selfless act.
