The usually idyllic St Kilda Pier was transformed into a scene of horror last Thursday when a Norwegian tourist was brutally assaulted by a gang of eight people in broad daylight.
The 34-year-old man, who was visiting Melbourne for the holidays, was approached by the group about lunchtime and allegedly bashed, robbed of his phone, and then watched in terror as his attackers callously threw the device into the ocean.
The victim was rushed to hospital, where he was treated for a broken arm – a painful reminder of the terrifying ordeal he endured. So traumatised was the tourist that he cut his trip short and returned home, his holiday experience in Australia shattered.
Police attended the scene, but the gang had already fled, leaving behind a trail of fear and uncertainty. Authorities are now urging anyone with information to come forward, and have released images of three men and a woman who may be able to assist with the investigation.
‘It’s appalling that this could happen in such a public place,’ a police spokesperson said. ‘We urge anyone who witnessed the attack or has any information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit an online confidential report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.’
The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, with many expressing outrage and disgust at the senseless attack on an innocent tourist. ‘This is not the Melbourne we know and love,’ said one local resident. ‘We need to stand together and ensure that our city remains a safe and welcoming place for all.’
