In a heart-stopping drama, two women were forced to take a desperate leap of faith from their balcony in the dead of night as a mysterious inferno engulfed their unit block in Sydney’s south.
The blaze, which is being treated as suspicious, broke out at the Truman Ave unit block in Riverwood about 1.15am on Wednesday, sending the two women, aged 31 and 37, running for their lives.
In a shocking display of bravery, the pair jumped from their balcony, suffering horrific leg and foot injuries as they desperately tried to escape the raging inferno.
“It was like something out of a nightmare,” said one neighbour, who wished to remain anonymous. “I was woken up by the sound of screams and glass shattering. It was terrifying.”
Police and firefighters rushed to the scene, with officers helping to evacuate other residents from the unit block as firefighters battled to contain the blaze.
“A crime scene has been established, and investigations have commenced,” a police spokesperson said, as detectives began to sift through the ruins of the destroyed unit.
As the two injured women were taken to hospital for treatment, residents were left to ponder the question on everyone’s lips: was this a deliberate act of arson?
The investigation is ongoing, but one thing is certain – the people of Riverwood will be left shaken by this terrifying ordeal for a long time to come.
