In a heart-stopping scene, the convenience store worker was stabbed in the neck during a daring robbery in Klemzig, Adelaide, on Tuesday night. The young man, 21, was lucky to escape with his life after being attacked by a knife-wielding thief.
“I saw a guy running from the main road to the OG hotel,” recalled restaurant owner Akhil Veloor, who witnessed the aftermath of the attack. “I came back and saw the convenience store was robbed and I could see all the boxes on the floor.”
The victim, who had been working at the convenience store, was seen running for his life towards a nearby pub, where patrons and staff rushed to his aid. “He’s really lucky,” said Veloor. “I saw him running without a t-shirt. It’s shocking to see our neighbours getting stabbed.”
Patrons at the pub helped the injured worker into the gaming room, where staff grabbed a first aid kit and applied pressure to his bleeding neck until paramedics arrived. The victim was taken to hospital in a critical condition but is now stable.
Witnesses described the chaotic scene, with one bystander saying, “Disgusting. Animal-like. A wound stabbed to the neck. You would think that would be fatal.”
Bystanders reported seeing one of the men wielding a machete, sparking fears of a violent confrontation. “They might have had a fight, I’m not sure,” said Veloor. “They came to try, came to steal some smokes… they might have stabbed him and the guy ran.”
The incident has highlighted the growing crime crisis in Klemzig, with nearby workers claiming the convenience store has been broken into ten times in the past three months. “The crime is going up in Adelaide, especially, I think, yeah in this area,” said Veloor. “I’ve heard of a lot of stores getting break-ins recently.”
Police are urging anyone with information to come forward, as the hunt for the perpetrators continues.
