Rebecca Joynes, a 30-year-old maths teacher, has been officially banned from the profession after being jailed for 6.5 years for striking up relationships with two male students and having a baby with one of them.
Joynes’ sordid sex scandal began in 2021 when she targeted a 15-year-old boy, known as ‘Boy A’, in her maths class. The pair started texting in a “normal” way at first, but Joynes soon asked if he wanted to meet up. She took him to Selfridges, where she bought him a $700 Gucci belt, before taking him back to her flat in her Audi.
Footage showed Joynes laughing and telling the boy to “shut up” when he mentioned his age, before the pair had unprotected sex twice at her flat. The boy later sent a photo to his friends of Joynes lying down as proof they slept together.
When confronted, the boy initially claimed it was just a “stupid conversation” with his mates that got out of control. However, his mother later received a call from the school saying an allegation had been made, and a police investigation was launched in October 2021.
Despite being arrested and bailed on the condition she did not contact any child under 18, Joynes “brazenly” set her sights on a second pupil, ‘Boy B’, when he was aged 15. She sent him a photo of her bum while wearing a pair of knickers and wrote him a gushing note describing him as “perfect”.
Once Boy B turned 16, the pair started a sexual relationship, with Joynes taking his virginity at her flat. They went on to have sex at least 30 times in “numerous different places”. Joynes told Boy B it was “nearly impossible” for her to get pregnant because she had polycystic ovary syndrome, but she later gave birth to his child.
Sentencing Joynes, Judge Kate Cornell said she showed “breathtaking gall” and “astonishing arrogance”. A misconduct panel later ruled that Joynes’ behaviour brought the teaching profession into disrepute and abused her position of trust.
Phil Thompson, chairman of the panel, said, “The panel is satisfied that these were extremely serious offences. Her behaviour, leading to the convictions, including extensive breaches of professional boundaries, amounted to unacceptable professional conduct.”
Joynes was left sobbing as she was jailed for 6.5 years in July last year. She has now been officially banned from teaching indefinitely, with the misconduct panel handing out a prohibition order.
