Isiah Whitlock Jr, the talented actor who brought to life some of television’s most iconic characters, has died at the age of 71. The news of his passing has sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry, with fans and colleagues alike mourning the loss of a true Hollywood legend.
Whitlock Jr’s rise to fame began with his breakout role as corrupt State Senator R. Clayton “Clay” Davis on the critically acclaimed series The Wire. His portrayal of the cunning and ruthless politician earned him widespread recognition and critical acclaim. However, it was his iconic catchphrase “Sh*******t” that cemented his place in pop culture history.
In a 2008 interview, Whitlock Jr revealed that he had picked up the phrase from his uncle Leon, and had first used it in Spike Lee’s 2002 film 25th Hour. The phrase quickly became a fan favourite, and was soon written into The Wire script. “I did it there, and I did it in She Hate Me,” Whitlock Jr recalled. “But then, when I got on to The Wire, I saw a couple of opportunities where I could do it, and I did. And they started writing it in.”
Throughout his illustrious career, Whitlock Jr worked with some of the biggest names in the industry, including Spike Lee, with whom he collaborated on six films. He was also a series regular on HBO’s Veep, playing the role of Secretary of Defence General George Maddox, and appeared in multiple episodes of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and Criminal Intent.
Whitlock Jr’s final TV role was on the Netflix series The Residence, which premiered just last month. The show’s cast and crew were left reeling by the news of his passing, with many taking to social media to pay tribute to the beloved actor.
Longtime manager Brian Liebman remembered Whitlock Jr as a “brilliant actor and even better person”. “He was loved by all who had the pleasure to work with or know him,” Liebman told Deadline. “He will be greatly missed.”
