A desperate rescue operation is underway at a Central Queensland mine, where a man is trapped after a devastating roof collapse. The incident occurred at the Mammoth Underground mine, part of the Curragh mine complex, just north of Blackwater, on Friday afternoon.
Emergency services were called to the scene at around 3pm, and specialist rescue teams are working tirelessly to reach the trapped worker. The mine’s operator has confirmed that operations have been suspended at the Mammoth Underground mine until further notice.
In a statement, the operator said: “Emergency response teams, in coordination with relevant authorities, are currently undertaking response and rescue activities on site. Support is being provided to staff affected by the incident.”
At least one other worker was treated for injuries at the scene, but another man remains unaccounted for. The incident has sent shockwaves through the close-knit mining community, with many taking to social media to express their concern.
Central Highlands Regional Council Mayor Janice Moriarty said: “We know the mine rescue teams are highly trained and have all the resources they need to do their very best. We’re waiting for word, and our thoughts are with the families of those affected.”
Federal MP for Capricornia Michelle Landry added: “Our mining community is a close-knit one. We look out for each other, and safety is always the top priority. My thoughts are with those affected by this incident.”
The incident is the latest in a series of accidents at the Curragh mine complex, which has been operating for over 40 years. According to the Mine Safety Institute of Australia, there have been at least three other mine accidents at the site since 2010, resulting in the deaths of three workers.
As the rescue operation continues, the community is holding its breath for news of the trapped worker. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by miners every day, and the importance of prioritising safety above all else.
