In a senseless and brutal attack, a young male’s life has been tragically cut short in a targeted drive-by shooting in Fitzroy, Melbourne’s inner-north. The incident occurred just after midnight on King William Street, with a police officer from the nearby Fitzroy Police Station reporting hearing two gunshots and rushing to administer first aid to the victim.
Despite the officer’s best efforts, the young male, who is yet to be formally identified, sadly succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Police believe the attack was targeted, with Detective Acting Inspector Brett Meadows revealing, “We’ve got two persons walking down the street when shots are fired from a moving vehicle at those two persons, it certainly appears to be targeted.”
The investigation is ongoing, with police cordoning off a section of King William Street as detectives search the area for any clues. Forensic investigators have been examining a car with a smashed windshield, which was found inside the cordon. However, no arrests have been made, and those involved are believed to have fled the scene in a silver-coloured SUV before police arrived.
A second male, seen walking with the victim on CCTV, is still at large and urged to come forward. Police are pleading for witnesses to share any information, including CCTV footage, that may assist in the investigation. The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, with flowers left near the scene of the shooting as a tribute to the young victim.
As the investigation continues, police are urging anyone with information to come forward. In a heartfelt appeal, Detective Acting Inspector Meadows said, “We need the public’s help to piece together the events of last night. If you have any information, no matter how small, please contact Crime Stoppers.”
