Tragedy Strikes at Unpatrolled Beach: Heroic Rescue Effort Fails to Save Young Man’s Life as He Drowns in Treacherous Waters
- A 34-year-old man has lost his life in a devastating drowning incident at Green Patch beach in the Jervis Bay Territory, despite a daring rescue attempt by a brave bystander.
- Joel Bisnette, 20, risked his own life to save three swimmers from the rough waters, but was unable to revive the young victim.
- The tragedy occurred just a day after a spearfisherman drowned at a nearby beach, sparking fears about the safety of the region’s unpatrolled coastlines.
In a heart-wrenching turn of events, a young man’s life was cut short when he drowned at Green Patch beach in the Jervis Bay Territory on Saturday afternoon. The 34-year-old NSW man was among multiple people pulled from the water after getting caught in treacherous conditions.
ACT Policing confirmed that emergency services responded to a distress call around 4:45pm, but despite the best efforts of paramedics, the man was declared deceased at the scene. Three other people were treated by paramedics but did not require further medical attention.
In a dramatic account of the rescue effort, Joel Bisnette, 20, revealed how he paddled out to save three swimmers using a paddleboard. “I paddled out and I got the first guy on the board, paddled back in, brought him onto the beach, and then I went back out to get the next guy,” he said.
But as he approached the second swimmer, Mr Bisnette realised the gravity of the situation. “When I was paddling out, I thought that he was okay, but when I got close he was just basically sinking under the water, completely submerged.”
Mr Bisnette brought the man back to shore, where others began administering first aid, but it was too late. The young man was pronounced dead, leaving his loved ones and the community in shock.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety of unpatrolled beaches in the region, with signposts in the area warning of dangerous currents at Green Patch beach. The beach is located in the Booderee National Park, a federal Australian territory that falls under ACT Policing jurisdiction.
This tragedy comes just a day after a spearfisherman drowned at Lobster Bay Beach, near Currarong, about 60km from Jervis Bay. The incidents have sparked a renewed focus on beach safety and the importance of swimmers being aware of the risks associated with unpatrolled coastlines.
A report will be prepared for the ACT coroner, as the man died in waters designated to the Capital Territory. The incident serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers that lurk in our waters, and the importance of vigilance and preparedness when it comes to beach safety.
