A senseless tragedy has unfolded on Tasmania’s west coast, leaving two families shattered by the loss of their loved ones. A 15-year-old girl from interstate and a 38-year-old Rosebery man, who were both on a Honda all-terrain vehicle, died at the scene after colliding with a Mitsubishi Triton on the Murchison Highway.
The driver of the ute, a 40-year-old man, miraculously escaped the crash without injury. However, the same cannot be said for the two victims, who were pronounced dead at the scene.
“Tasmania Police would like to thank the group of interstate tourists who stopped and rendered medical assistance at the scene,” police said in a statement. “Their actions were truly heroic and a testament to the kindness of strangers.”
The police investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing, with a report to be prepared for the coroner. The highway was reopened to traffic overnight, but the community remains in shock.
“Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of both the deceased,” police said. “This is a devastating tragedy that will have a lasting impact on the community.”
Anyone with information about the crash is urged to contact police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. As the investigation continues, the community comes together to mourn the loss of two innocent lives.
