In a devastating blow to family and friends, human remains have been found in the search for missing snorkeller Wen Ren Gu, 32, who vanished while diving for crayfish on New Year’s Day. The remains were discovered on Fence Reef Beach, a popular spot in the coastal town of Ledge Point, 120km north of Perth.
Gu had travelled to the area with friends from the city, eager to spend the day snorkelling for crayfish in the crystal-clear waters of Ledge Point Beach. But as the day wore on, Gu failed to resurface, sparking a frantic search and rescue operation.
“Formal identification is yet to be completed, but it is believed to be a 32-year-old man who went missing on Thursday,” a WA Police spokesperson said, their voice laced with sadness. “His death is not being treated as suspicious.”
The search for Gu had been a massive effort, with significant aerial and marine resources deployed, including helicopters, drones, boats, jet skis, and several police divers. But as the hours ticked by, hopes of finding Gu alive began to dwindle.
Now, as the news of the discovery of human remains sinks in, family and friends are left to come to terms with the tragic loss of a loved one. “It’s just devastating,” said a friend, who wished to remain anonymous. “We were all hoping he would be found safe and sound.”
A report will be prepared for the coroner, as police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Gu’s disappearance and death.
