Former Australian cricket legend Damien Martyn has made a remarkable recovery, waking from an induced coma and returning home after fears for his life. The 54-year-old was rushed to hospital in late December with a bout of meningitis, an infection and swelling of fluid and membranes around the brain and spinal cord.
Martyn’s condition was so critical that he was placed in an induced coma, leaving his family and friends on edge. But in a dramatic turn of events, he awoke last week and began talking again, sparking relief and joy among those closest to him.
Adam Gilchrist, Martyn’s former teammate, revealed the news on Kayo Sports during the fifth Ashes Test, saying: “It’s terrific and wonderful to know he’s back home, and his family express their gratitude and thanks for all the support.”
Gilchrist praised the ambulance officers who treated Martyn, saying: “The word from the medical staff was they could not have done it any more perfectly, which nipped the infection in the bud. He still has a bit of a journey to go. It was extreme, but great news.”
Martyn’s cricket career was nothing short of extraordinary, earning a Test debut at just 21 and going on to play a pivotal role in Australia’s 2003 World Cup victory. He was appointed Western Australia’s Sheffield Shield captain at 23 and was player of the series the last time Australia won the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in India in 2004.
With a highest Test score of 165 and 13 centuries to his name, Martyn averaged an impressive 46.37 throughout his career. He also played 208 ODIs, averaging 40.8 and scoring an unbeaten 88 runs when Australia defeated India in the final of the 2003 World Cup in South Africa.
Martyn’s miraculous recovery is a testament to his strength and resilience, and his return home will be met with relief and joy from cricket fans across the country.
