A quiet suburban street in southeast Queensland has been left reeling after a 46-year-old carer was found dead on the back steps of a client’s home, sparking a murder investigation that has led to the arrest of a 36-year-old man.
The woman, from Brisbane, was found with injuries at the two-storey property on Waterford Tamborine Rd in Buccan about 2.30am on Monday, just hours after she was reported missing from Ashgrove in Brisbane’s northwest.
Police had launched a welfare check at the Buccan address after the woman’s disappearance was deemed out of character by her family, who raised concerns with authorities.
‘She was a very caring person, always putting others before herself,’ a relative said, struggling to come to terms with the loss. ‘We’re just devastated.’
Detective Acting Inspector Justin Anderson revealed that the woman regularly visited the 36-year-old man in a professional capacity as his carer. ‘We believe she was last seen at The Gap about 7pm on Saturday after dropping a family member at a party,’ he said.
The man, who was not at the property when police arrived, was arrested later in the day in Kempsey, on the NSW Mid North Coast. He is expected to face court in NSW on Tuesday, with Queensland detectives set to travel south to speak with him.
Neighbours described the house as having been unoccupied for some time, with one local saying it was sold last year. ‘The man worked from home, but we never really saw him,’ they said.
Investigations are ongoing, with the cause of the woman’s death yet to be determined pending the results of a post-mortem examination.
In a stark warning, Detective Acting Inspector Anderson urged anyone with information to come forward. ‘We need the community’s help to piece together the events surrounding this tragic incident,’ he said.
