Emergency services were called to the scene on Dorothy St in Fawkner just after 2pm on Monday, with fire crews racing against time to save the occupants of the burning building.
Tragically, despite the best efforts of first responders, a three-year-old child was pronounced dead at the scene. The child’s family is said to be ‘absolutely devastated’ by the loss.
A man, believed to be a family member, was pulled from the wreckage and is currently being treated for non-life threatening injuries. His condition is said to be stable, but the full extent of his injuries is not yet known.
In a desperate bid to piece together what happened, Victoria Police are urging anyone who witnessed the incident, or has dashcam or CCTV footage, to come forward. ‘We need the public’s help to determine the cause of this tragic fire,’ a police spokeswoman said.
As the investigation continues, the community is in shock, with neighbours and friends of the family struggling to come to terms with the devastating loss. ‘It’s just heartbreaking,’ one neighbour said. ‘Our thoughts are with the family at this incredibly difficult time.’
