Scandal Rocks NT Government as Chief Minister Defends Nomination of Controversial Administrator
- David Connolly, a former cattlemen’s association president, is set to become the NT’s 24th administrator despite questionable social media posts
- Connolly’s deleted account on X revealed a history of controversial posts, including objectifying Australian women’s beach volleyball team members and comparing PM Albanese to a blue whale’s backside
- Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro defends Connolly’s nomination, claiming she hadn’t seen the posts, and that he’ll “fight for the territory and put our economy first”
The Northern Territory is facing a political storm as Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro stands by her nomination of David Connolly as the next territory administrator, despite a series of controversial social media posts surfacing from his deleted account on X. Connolly, a former president of the NT Cattlemen’s Association, is set to be sworn in next month, but his online history has raised serious questions about his suitability for the role.
The resurfaced posts include a picture of scantily clad Australian women’s beach volleyball team members embracing during the Paris Olympics in 2024, captioned “Hey troops, off to the beach volleyball today. Don’t know why but I am really looking forward to it.” Another post from 2023 reads “White privilege — the ability to suffer life’s universal indignities without blaming another ethnic group”. In February 2024, Connolly reposted a tweet comparing Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to a blue whale’s backside, describing him as the “largest arsehole in the world”.
Finocchiaro has defended her nomination of Connolly, claiming she hadn’t seen the social media posts in question. “At the end of the day this has been approved by the Northern Territory government and the federal government and Connolly will be our next administrator,” she said. “We’ve selected someone who’s going to fight for the territory and put our economy first and that’s what we need in an administrator. I think it’s going to be a change of pace and I really think Territorians are going to love him.”
However, Centre for Public Integrity director Geoffrey Watson has called on Finocchiaro to rethink her nomination of Connolly. “Ideally, an administrator is going to be politically neutral and these social media posts, they seem to indicate that this candidate is not,” Watson told the ABC. “I’m going to presume the chief minister was unaware of this sort of material before suggesting this was an appropriate candidate. No appointment having yet been made, I think it’s time to rethink it.”
Analysis: What This Means for Australia
The controversy surrounding Connolly’s nomination raises serious concerns about the judgment of Chief Minister Finocchiaro and the NT government. The territory administrator plays a critical role in representing the NT’s interests and upholding the values of the Australian people. The appointment of someone with a history of controversial and divisive social media posts undermines the integrity of the office and raises questions about the government’s commitment to promoting a positive and inclusive image of the territory.
Security analysts say that the controversy highlights the need for greater scrutiny of political appointees and a more transparent vetting process to ensure that those in positions of power are fit for the role. Law enforcement insiders warn that the appointment of someone with a questionable online history could compromise the territory’s relationships with law enforcement agencies and undermine trust in the administration.
Industry observers believe that the controversy will have economic implications for the NT, potentially deterring investors and tourists who value a positive and inclusive image of the territory. The controversy also raises broader questions about the role of social media in political life and the need for greater accountability from public figures.
