In a devastating weekend for NSW, two men are feared dead after separate drowning incidents on the state’s coast and in its central west. The tragic events have sparked massive search operations, with emergency services racing against time to find the missing men.
The first incident occurred on Sunday evening at Mystery Bay Beach, about 12 kilometres south of Narooma, where a 23-year-old man fell off rocks and into the ocean. The man, who was sightseeing with a friend, slipped and fell several metres, failing to resurface. Despite an initial 90-minute search, the man was not found, and the operation was suspended until Monday morning.
Chief Inspector Shane Jessep from the South Coast Police District said the man’s friend reported the incident, and a search began immediately. “He wasn’t a rock fisherman, it was a male sightseeing and … appears to have had an accident and slipped on the rocks,” Jessep said.
The search resumed on Monday morning, with two vessels conducting a parallel line search between Bogola Head and Bermagui. NSW Police officers have not ruled out expanding the search at sea, but conditions remain challenging, with choppy waters and volunteers on board the search vessels suffering from sea sickness.
Meanwhile, in the Central West, a 41-year-old man went missing while paddleboarding on Lake Cargelligo, north-west of West Wylong. The man fell off his board and did not resurface, sparking a multi-agency search involving the State Emergency Service (SES), NSW Ambulance, and a Rural Fire Service (RFS) helicopter.
Acting Inspector Adam Tonkin from NSW Police said it was too early to determine the cause of the incident, but weather conditions were “windy and choppy” at the time. A team of divers from the Sydney Marine Area Command has been called in to assist, and family members of the missing man remain at the scene.
Lachlan Shire Council Mayor John Medcalf described the incident as “an absolute tragedy” and praised the local community for their support during the search. “That shows what a community Lake Cargelligo is,” Councillor Medcalf said. “They support each other and are only trying to help because they really do feel it is a tragedy.”
Analysis: What This Means for Australia
These tragic incidents highlight the importance of water safety in Australia. With the country’s vast coastline and numerous waterways, the risk of drowning is ever-present. The incidents also underscore the need for increased awareness and education on water safety, particularly during peak holiday seasons.
Security analysts say that while the incidents are unrelated, they demonstrate the critical role of emergency services in responding to water-based emergencies. The search operations have involved multiple agencies, showcasing the importance of interagency cooperation in times of crisis.
As the searches continue, the people of NSW are left to mourn the potential loss of two young lives. The incidents serve as a stark reminder of the dangers that lurk in our waterways and the importance of vigilance and caution when engaging in water activities.
Industry observers believe that the incidents will lead to a renewed focus on water safety initiatives and awareness campaigns, particularly in high-risk areas like the NSW coast and inland waterways.
As the investigation into the incidents continues, one thing is clear: the people of NSW are in mourning, and the state’s emergency services are working tirelessly to bring closure to the families affected by these tragic events.
