The discovery of human remains at a rural Queensland home that was destroyed by a suspicious fire on Saturday night has left police and the community reeling.
A 75-year-old man and a 79-year-old woman who lived at the property remain unaccounted for, sparking a desperate search for answers. Forensic examinations are underway to identify the remains, as investigators work to determine the cause of the blaze that engulfed the single-storey property.
The fire, which was reported at 9:15pm on Saturday, was tackled by nine Queensland Fire Department crews, but the roof of the property collapsed and the building was destroyed.
Police were unable to safely start inspecting the property until Monday, with the roof being removed yesterday. Parts of the house are still being removed, and investigators are using drone equipment to get an aerial view of the scene.
“They have been using drone equipment to get an aerial view of what’s going on,” said Bundaberg Police Inspector Grant Marcus.
“We can also use that footage to zoom in on certain parts of the house and also try and use that equipment to identify where the main heat source may have been.” Police are appealing to anyone with information or images that may assist investigations to come forward.
The fire has raised concerns about the safety of rural communities, with police urging anyone with information to come forward. The incident has also highlighted the challenges faced by emergency services in responding to fires in remote areas.
