Jake Edward Warn, from Warrami, 125 kilometres south of Cairns, has been remanded in custody after allegedly stealing a Toyota LandCruiser ute and crashing into two vehicles on the Smithfield Bypass.
According to police, Warn was driving south on the Smithfield Bypass when he crashed into a northbound Subaru Impreza and a Toyota Rav4, killing the sole occupant of the Rav4, a 25-year-old woman from nearby Kewarra Beach.
The incident occurred just before 1:30pm on Wednesday, with police and paramedics called to the scene shortly after.
Police claim Warn was driving under the influence of an intoxicating substance at the time of the crash. After the incident, he allegedly entered a Toyota C-HR and forced the driver, a 71-year-old man, to drive him from the scene.
The elderly man was not physically injured in the ordeal.
Warn was arrested by police on Reservoir Rd in Manoora, on the western side of the city, and taken to Cairns Hospital.
He has been charged with five offences, including manslaughter, failing to remain at an incident and render assistance, dangerous operation of a vehicle, unlawful entry of a vehicle, and stealing a vehicle.
