A litter of kittens was found at a beach in Perth, and they were left in a carrier without water or food.
They were discovered at around 10 am on Saturday. A sign stating “Free kittens” was taped to the crate.
A good Samaritan then called Shenton Park’s Cat Haven to rescue the animals.
According to Amber Ashford, a spokesperson for Cat Haven, they did not know how long the litter had been at the beach.
She said the animals appeared to be thirsty and skinny.
The kittens are now in good condition, though Ashford noted that the high temperature on Saturday might have affected their health.
She said that they were worried about the animals’ well-being since they appeared to be thirsty.
The shelter had a vet standby, and the litter will be desexed over the weekend to prepare them for adoption.
The number of cats that Cat Haven receives each year is around 7,000. Strays make up about 70% of the facility’s population.
Most of the time, people who no longer want to care for the animals surrender them.
In one instance, a 17-year-old female cat was found inside a bin.
In 2020, the RSPCA WA received over a thousand abandoned cats. According to Cat Haven, their goal is to find as many cats as they can to be spayed or neutered.
They also hope that the litter that was found at the beach over the weekend will find a home.
According to Ashford, Cat Haven will take any cat that needs a home
. Those who intentionally leave an animal in WA could be fined up to $50,000 and imprisoned for up to five years.
