Starting today, millions of drivers in Victoria will be able to use a digital version of their license.
This is the latest state to allow this, following in the footsteps of NSW, South Australia, Queensland and even the US.
A trial involving 15,000 residents in Ballarat earlier this year led to the digitalisation of their licences.
According to Melissa Horne, the minister for roads, the digital version of licenses will be rolled out to all drivers starting next month.
Around 4.5 million of the state’s licensed drivers will be the first to benefit from the new system.
Through a timed QR code, the police, merchants, and other authorities will have the ability to verify the authenticity of the license.
This process will begin in April and involve consultation with establishments such as restaurants, bars, and the police.
Ms Horne noted that the new system will allow people to go about their everyday activities more easily.
Residents of Queensland became the latest to benefit from the digital version of their licenses when it was introduced in November.
After South Australia followed suit in 2017, NSW followed suit two years later.
According to Gabrielle Williams, the drivers in Victoria have urged the state government to follow suit.
In response to the growing number of drivers asking for a digital license, the government has decided to implement the system in the state.
From next month, millions of people will be able to access their licenses on their smartphones.
